Technical Tip For The Block Side Arm & Shoulder Entry

Pulling the Shoulder Around.
Pulling the shoulder around in the discus throw will crush your distance and you’ll lose power at the finish.
Just that sentence alone should have you analyzing each and every throw!
If you pull the arm and shoulder together you’ll typically fall into the throw…
… which will force you to pull at the finish.
This is a very common discus technique mistake and is a distance blocker.

In my recent discussions, I have talked about the feedback mechanism, and how setting up the throw properly signals the right feeling of the throw.
The Path of the left shoulder is critical in the technique of all rotational throws…. and if you’re a lefty, I got you- it’s the right shoulder.
The Block shoulder path is paramount to the big throws and the sprint phase of the throw.
Over the years, I’ve given this wrong technical motion a few nicknames, one being the Dracula Shoulder.
You know, the old Dracula movies where the vampire hold his cape and peeks over his shoulder?
yea… don’t do that!
Understanding the path of the left shoulder (right for Lefties) is a big, big deal.
And the inability to do it right, is often a clear red flag that the athlete has a posture deficiency.
Aaaahh throwing- there are so many little details that must line up for big throws.
It’s why this is a tough sport. And why training must be done right.
Training wrong over and over, teaches how to throw incorrectly…
then it takes a lot of time and hard work to unlearn the wrong technical movements and throwing form, so you can then
learn the correct discus technique and form.
The littlest thing can throw off the Throwing Chain Reaction®.
I coached a high school athlete on this very topic and in one week, she improved improved 22 feet from last season.
